One thing that always catches my kids’ eyes is color. Bright colors make life so much more interesting! When it comes to food, this can be kind of tricky. Our natural foods inspiring thoughts of rainbows fall mostly into the fruit category. Don’t get me wrong, my kids will eat some fruit, but my daughter is more of a meat and dairy gal. My son, well things have been complicated and he has some issues with textures. Add in some wheat and corn intolerances and the items he will eat is a short list.

Nature’s Flavors, has now come out with Natural Colors. Natural, vegan, gluten free and chemical free, Natural Colors, gives you the option to jazz up your baked goods, icing, dips, and more without unwanted additives. Red dye #40 and Yellow Dye #5 have been linked to behavioral issues in children as well as other problems. Be confident you can avoid these chemicals using an all natural food coloring!

Nature’s Flavors Natural Colors Rainbow Pack comes in 100% recycled packaging with five colors of Natural Cherry Red, Natural Blue, Natural Honeydew Green, Natural Yellow and Natural Pumpkin! Each one is in a two ounce glass bottle.

I have actually never used food coloring before, but with the prominence of rainbow cake and funky cupcakes all over, I thought it would be fun to incorporate. One sneaky way I incorporated coloring was in yogurt for the kids. They don’t love the plain, unsweetened yogurt, but a couple drops of blue sure tricks them into thinking they are getting the fruity, sugary kind! Bad mommy. I know.

And what better to use on pumpkin pie muffins than the Natural Pumpkin color? We colored our cream cheese frosting to a pumpkin orange. The flavor wasn’t altered at all and our mini pies looked all the more festive.

I actually tasted the coloring undiluted to see how bitter it is and it was mild enough that it likely would not alter the flavor of your recipe unless you used a huge amount. Pleasantly surprised, I found the color stains on my kids’ faces to wash away pretty easily. I am looking forward to using Natural Colors on our Christmas cookies this Fall. I might be inspired enough to take on the arduous task of iced cutouts.

You can purchase Natural Colors at NaturesFlavors.com. The Rainbow pack is also available in a powder version. The entire pack is $49.95 and goes a long way. Nature’s Flavors also makes flavor extracts, supplements, syrups, and powders for enhancing your cooking and baking experiences.
