Life Lately: Christmas In The Country

chickens, art, baby

We have been busy, busy, busy. Every time I turn around, there is something new on the calendar.

December has been mild so far this yer, We only had a couple subzero temp days.  I hope that doesn’t mean Mother Nature is storing them up for January and February. We aren’t exactly known for pleasant winters around here. The chickens are doing fine without any heat in their coop. They come out in the single digit temperatures just like and day and frolic in the snow. I guess they don’t need the heat. I am glad I went with my instincts on going without the heater. Sometimes the eggs are frozen when I collect them, but only a few have crcked from freezing.

The baby is four months old on this exact day, as I type. She is sleeping through the night most of the time now. Although I think we are due for a growth spurt and sleep regression soon. She is certainly well fed.

art , chickens, eggs

I’ve managed to get a little painting done, but not much. There is simply too much to do for Christmas. I still have shopping and wrapping to do. And roasting and baking and coop cleaning and snow shoveling and tallow rendering…….and I guess I’ll raise those kids a little bit. Maybe.

An interesting thing. Our inner city school district was very politically correct, to the point of strict avoidance of gendered pronouns. Our new rural school district? Well, the public elementary school my children attend has an honest to goodness Christmas tree in the lobby. A BIG one. That threw me for a loop!
