Living in Minnesota, we deal with our fair share of mosquitoes, even in the city. After getting nearly chewed alive recently, we have contemplated how to configure our yard in a way to repel some of the bugs without the use of chemicals. sure, DEET is just about all that works when on a hike near the Boundary Waters, but here in town, we can use a more mild and friendly approach.

In place of chemical sprays and pesticides, try a cluster of mosquito-repelling potted plants. Grouped together near a seating area on your deck or patio, they make a pretty and lush addition to your outdoor landscape while also protecting you and your guests. Plant a few around your landscaping, in your window boxes, and near the splash pool for some relief from those hungry critters.

Check out One Kings Lane’s article Easy Update: Mosquito-Repelling Potagerie for more information about how a trio of lush potted plants will have you saying good-bye to bug spray.

It is a little late in the season for added container gardening for me, but I plan to incorporate some of these plants in my patio pots next Spring!

Do you use strategic gardening to fight bugs in your outdoor space?
